Malawi 2011 Container Project

If you can’t leave your footprints there…
at least leave your fingerprints.

Gathering items to fill the Container for the Passion Center in Malawi was a huge success. Be sure to check back regularly for shipping status updates as we track the container. Our short term mission team plans to help unload the container in Malawi this summer!

Project Updates

Container Unloading

We have received messages from The Passion Center expressing thanksgiving and praise to God for such blessings. Joseph, a Passion Center staff member, said, “the kids are beaming and so excited.”

Four months ago we sent off the container trusting and praying that the Lord’s will would be done. He saw the container safely to the Passion Center and we look forward to the contents blessing the orphans in Zomba, Malawi for years to come.

Container shipping synopsis

Throughout the entire shipment of the container, it has been a reminder of God’s timing and how His timing is perfect and not ours. In our view and plans, we desired to have the container arrive prior to the Northwest mission trip team’s arrival. Naturally, it made sense for our teams to be present to help unload, distribute, and see the immediate joy and excitement in the Malawian’s eyes.

A few final items

The container is now over 80% full! It is so cool how much the church body has rallied around providing for some of the physical needs of the orphans at the Passion Center for Children in Malawi. The following is a list of a few finals items needed as we finish up the Container Project.

The Littlest Fingerprints

“If you can’t leave your footprints there…at least leave your fingerprints.”

The children of Northwest have taken this challenge to heart. Not only are they giving generously to cover the Passion Center with their fingerprints, many have taken the children in Africa to heart in even more personal ways.

“…
at least leave your fingerprints”

While a trip to Malawi isn’t possible for everyone, we each have the opportunity to participate in the Container Project. By now, we’ve all heard it, “If you can’t leave your footprints there, at least leave your fingerprints,” and we’re doing it by giving, organizing, and packing. Now, you have one more way to send your fingerprints, literally!

How our children’s classes are getting involved

As Jon Herman described—in the introduction of the Container Project last Sunday morning—we want this to be an opportunity to teach your children about other kids who have less but are loved by God just as much. Here’s a great way for your kids to be involved through their Sunday morning classes!

Opening Sunday

The Malawi Container Project began this Sunday and the response was overwhelming. Individuals, couples, and families flocked around the info counters, leafing through item cards and making friends with those around them. Once the second service was over, it was an amazing sight to see all the empty card holders. Our church family came together in a huge way!

While the bulk of the action was happening in the foyer, down at the South end of the building, we were able to place the first items in the container. A few guys worked together to unload 176 donated Rubbermaid totes that will be a clean, dry place for the children at the Passion Center to store some of their clothes.

Let's keep it coming!

Mock container construction begins

A skilled crew of volunteers began building a mock container in the foyer by the gym Tuesday evening. This mock container will be the storage place for collections until it is time to pack the real metal shipping container at the end of the project. All of the wood from the mock container will be shipping to Malawi for reuse.

Next time you’re at the church, make a trip to that end of the building. The mockup is a great way to understand the scale of a forty foot shipping container.
