Sleeves Rolled Up, Hands Dirty

Volunteers make quick work of beautifying "these twenty acres"

A sense of excitement and determination flowed out of the 80+ volunteers who helped out at the Spring Workdays on May 9 & 10. Anyone driving onto Northwest Bible’s 20 acres would have seen an inspiring picture as people of all ages worked together with the goal of making the church grounds look their best. Bob Patterson, the Campus Operations Director, was excited to see the turnout and to see people give everything they had to the tasks at hand. He commented that he “was so blessed to see how everyone worked as a team to do whatever needed to be done.”

The annual Spring Workday, which began a few years ago, has always been an opportunity to really dig in and kick off the warmer months with beautiful landscaping, but this year seemed to have a different “feel.” There were Lifegroups, families, retired couples, young adults and teenagers working side by side to plant flowers, lay mulch and pull weeds. There was laughter mixed with hard work and, after the pizza intermission on Friday night (which gave everyone a chance to refuel), it was back to getting the job done. And the 60 volunteers that night almost finished all that needed to be done, until the rain interrupted their efforts. Saturday morning was just as effective as they finished up the remaining work.

The Spring Workdays seemed to be rooted so much deeper this year. It was one of the first all-church opportunities to serve since the New Beginnings series here at Northwest, and as the ground was toiled, flowers planted and fresh mulch laid; it served as a reminder of our fresh start. We want to continue to not only be aware of the outward needs of our church, but the needs of those in our church body. We want to continually be looking for new ways to serve each other and work as effectively as possible as one body in Christ. And it looks like we’re off to a great start.

If you missed out on the Spring Workday, but would like to get involved with this ministry—there is a spot for you! There are weekly teams for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings that help with weeding, edging and general bed maintenance.
